So, uh. I thought I was done with the drabble series. Then I discovered the B-side songs. So! Here's the first one of the mini-series! Main fic spoilers abound.
2. Shoplifter – “You’ll Never Learn”
Wave refused to cry.
It was that idiot’s own stupid sentimentality that got him killed. She knew damned well Jet had never gotten over that hedgehog, not completely, and that he was prone to doing crazy things out of love. Risking everything to save her and Storm that one time…
Idiot! Damned fool! How dare he leave them like this?! Giving his life to save a psycho who ended up getting offed anyway! What would his father say about this?!
“Better to try than to lose without a fight,” the gray albatross at her side murmured.
“Huh?” she replied, puzzled.
“You were ranting to yourself again,” he said calmly. He shrugged. “You asked what his father would’ve said, so I answered.”
“I do not rant to myself!” she defended. She closed her eyes and pinched the part of her beak closest to them. “But you’re probably right. Idiots, both of them.”
Storm shook his head. “No, they just knew what was truly valuable in this world.” He took he hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “We should go. She’s waiting for us.”
She nodded, irritation waning as she gave his hand a squeeze back, then pulled away to collect the urn. Idiot or not, Jet was still a Rogue, and it was time for him to return to the sky one final time. She only hoped his would’ve-been bride wouldn’t start crying; it might finally set her off as well.
Wave refused to cry. She feared if she started, she might never stop again.
